Yet another foldable device is coming into the picture. Vivo X Fold4 is probably releasing in the coming months, and we already have a tonne of fresh updates around it. Turns out the latest one comes from a popular tipster, according to whom Vivo is switching from sophisticated under-the-display fingerprint scanners on its foldable devices to side-mounted ones.
Here’s why Vivo is implementing a major design change for the upcoming Vivo X Fold4.
Vivo X Fold4 to Feature a Side-Mounted Fingerprint Scanner
All previous iterations under X Fold series had an under-the-display fingerprint scanner, but it seems like the Chinese maker wants to change a thing or two in the upcoming foldable device.
With Vivo X Fold4, we can see a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, as per Digital Chat Station, also known as DCS (via Gizmochina). Apparently, DCS has a reputation that precedes him putting gravitas to what he says on Weibo, and we are confident this bit is almost true as well.
All previous X Fold iterations had under-the-display fingerprint scanners. We had an optical implementation on the first-gen X Fold and X Fold+, followed by an ultrasonic FPS on the next two iterations. Cut to now, the Vivo X Fold4 will see a side-mounted fingerprint scanner likely in a bid to reduce the overall thickness of the device.
Smartphone makers are trying to get their foldable devices to shrink in terms of their thickness. The upcoming Oppo Find N5 is speculated to be 9.2mm thick in a folded state and that’s huge. The OnePlus Open 2 which is ultimately based on Find N5, will have the same thickness. As OEMs are trying to shrink their foldable devices under the 8mm range, here’s probably why Vivo took this step to get the excess fluff off its upcoming horizontally foldable phone.
Vivo X Fold4 Has Reportedly Delayed to Second Quarter This Year
Although not set in stone, it definitely pops up repeatedly that Vivo has delayed the Vivo X Fold4 launch to the second quarter of this year. Unlike Vivo X Fold3 which made it to the public (at least in China) on March 26 last year, we should see Vivo X Fold4 launch sometime between April to June this year. Unfortunately, we don’t have any dates whatsoever so yeah, the only thing we can do is wait.

Vivo X Fold4 Specifications (Rumored)
Oppo Find N5 will be the ultimate first foldable candidate housing a Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC once it arrives on February 20. Vivo X Fold4 will follow the wagon housing a powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC as well. There’s a hefty 6,000mAh battery powering the foldable.
Finally, the phone will be IPX8-rated. On the optics front, we have a 50MP primary, 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP telephoto shooter on board with 3x optical zoom. Anyway, we are expecting only one device under Vivo X Fold4 branding as there’s probably no ‘Pro’ this time around.
