Apple CEO Tim Cook has teased an exciting product announcement this week, sharing a short video with the tagline “there’s something in the Air.” Given the phrasing and the timing of the launch, all signs point to the unveiling of the new MacBook Air models.
Design and display
Apple will keep selling the MacBook Air in both 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. Although there won’t be any significant design updates, the new M4 MacBook Air will probably have the same look as the previous model. Apple does not usually update the design that often, the last significant redesign was in 2022, so it’s still quite new.
The new MacBook Air models are expected to maintain their current Liquid Retina Display (LED) technology. Although Apple uses mini-LED panels in its MacBook Pro lineup, this premium feature is unlikely to make its way to the Air just yet.
Additionally, Apple recently introduced a nano-texture matte display option for the MacBook Pro. While it would be a welcomed addition, there’s no concrete evidence that the MacBook Air will receive the same treatment.
Performance and chipset
The M4 chip has already been introduced in several Apple devices, including the MacBook Pro, iMac, iPad Pro, and Mac mini. Bringing the M4 to the MacBook Air is a logical next step.
Based on TSMC’s latest 3-nanometer process, the M4 boasts as many as a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, plus a 16-core Neural Engine built specifically for Apple Intelligence. Although it will outperform the M3, the performance increment is likely to be modest, with up to 25% improvement in CPU and GPU.
Memory and battery life
Last year, Apple increased the base RAM of the MacBook Air from 8GB to 16GB, and this change is expected to carry over to the new models. This upgrade ensures smoother multitasking and better overall system performance.
Apple’s new M4 chip is designed with better power efficiency, which could extend battery life. For comparison, the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro lasts up to 24 hours when streaming video or 16 hours when browsing the web. While the MacBook Air might not reach these numbers, slight gains in battery longevity are expected.
Camera and connectivity
The MacBook Pro recently received a 12-megapixel front-facing camera, and the MacBook Air could follow suit. If updated, it would support Center Stage, keeping users in focus during video calls, and Desk View, which provides an overhead perspective for demonstrations.
Currently, the MacBook Air features two Thunderbolt 3 ports. The next-generation models could receive an upgrade to three Thunderbolt 4 ports, enhancing speed and connectivity. Additionally, external display support could be expanded. This allows for multiple monitor setups similar to the latest MacBook Pro models.
Pricing: No major changes expected
The M3 MacBook Air currently starts at $1,099, and there are no rumors suggesting a price increase. Apple is likely to maintain this pricing structure to keep the MacBook Air competitive in its segment.
Other “Air” products in the pipeline?
While the M4 MacBook Air is the most likely reveal, Apple could surprise us with additional “Air” product updates. The iPad Air is due for a refresh this spring, and updated AirTags are expected in 2025.

Apple skipped a typical spring event this year, releasing recent products through press releases and web videos. The MacBook Air is expected to continue the same pattern, with a low-key but effective release expected as early as tomorrow.
