Google AI smart glasses were unveiled at I/O ’26 as part of the company’s expanding Android XR platform. The search engine firm unveiled two categories of intelligent eyewear, audio glasses and display glasses, with audio glasses scheduled to launch this fall.

Google expands Android XR ecosystem

During the I/O 2026 event, Google described the new smart glasses as devices designed to provide assistance without distracting users from their surroundings. The company said the eyewear will allow users to access Gemini AI through voice commands or by tapping the frame.

Google stated that both audio glasses and display glasses are designed to support hands-free interactions while keeping users “heads up” instead of focused on a phone screen. The company has not yet announced pricing or exact release dates for the products.

Fashion partnerships aim to make smart glasses more wearable

Google confirmed partnerships with Samsung and eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker for the first generation of Google AI smart glasses.

The company showed preview designs from both eyewear brands during the keynote presentation. Google said the products are intended to combine technology with lightweight and stylish designs suitable for all-day wear.

Gemini AI powers smart features

Google said Gemini AI will be integrated directly into the glasses to support a range of real-time features.

Users will be able to activate Gemini by saying “Hey Google” or by tapping the side of the frame. Once activated, the AI assistant can answer questions about nearby locations, objects, or signs in the user’s environment.

One example shared by Google included identifying cloud formations or reviewing restaurant information while walking nearby.

Smart glasses will support Android and iPhone

Google AI smart glasses will also offer turn-by-turn navigation based on the user’s location and viewing direction. Google said Gemini can adjust routes, add stops, and suggest nearby restaurants based on user preferences.

The company also announced support for calls, text messaging, and message summaries. Users will be able to interact with their contacts without taking out their smartphones. According to Google, the glasses will work with both Android and iOS devices.

Built-in camera and AI editing tools

The upcoming audio glasses will include the ability to capture photos and videos through voice commands. Google showed AI editing features powered by Nano Banana, allowing users to modify images using spoken instructions. During the presentation, Google showed examples such as adding playful visual effects to group photos.

The company said the glasses are designed to make content capture faster and more accessible in everyday situations.

Real-time translation and app integration

Google also pointed out live translation capabilities for both speech and written text. The glasses can apparently translate conversations while matching the speaker’s tone and pitch. Users can also look at menus or signs and hear translated audio responses.

In addition, Google confirmed integrations with third-party apps, including Uber and language-learning app Mondly. Users will be able to access these services through voice interactions connected to their smartphones. Google also showed the Gemini completing multi-step tasks, including preparing a coffee order through DoorDash before asking users for final confirmation.
