Looks like we just got a bit more clarity on the upcoming iPhone 17 Air dummy models as they prepare to debut in a few months’ time. The latest information comes from a credible tech YouTuber Unbox Therapy who got a few dummy units of the upcoming iPhone 17 series showing just how thin the Air is actually. Let’s dig into the story a bit more.
iPhone 17 Air Dummy Models Pops Up on the Internet
Lewis Hilsenteger of Unbox Therapy has received a few dummy units of iPhone 17 Series from Chinese accessories manufacturers. Ideally, these dummy units based on specifics from OEMs are used to fab accessories such as phone case and cover that is compatible with the upcoming devices.
Cut to the video, it shows iPhone 17 Air in its glory. The dummy units measure 5.5 mm in the thickest point, counting the camera bar. This actually makes Air the thinnest iPhone ever, taking on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim. Apparently, the YouTuber also got hands on iPhone 17 Pro models measuring 8.725 mm in thickness. This gives a reference to just how slim the Air will be once it debuts in the international market.
There’s Still Room for Changes
Lewis further went on to talk about how impressed he is with the iPhone 17 Air. He adds only if Apple finds a way to make the model durable and resistant to bending, as we are talking about a thickness of 5.5 mm. The Cupertino-based giant ended up in a bending situation with the iPhone 6 Plus back in 2014 and would want to avoid that kind of situation with the iPhone 17 Air for sure.
According to MacRumors, the iPhone 17 Air is likely to use titanium and aluminum chassis to counter any bending. Apple has likely worked around the display’s sizes as well, dialing down from 6.9” (to fall in line with iPhone 17 Pro Max) to 6.7” probably saving it from entering the embarrassing situation aforementioned.
However, a reduced thickness also translates into certain limitations. For instance, iPhone 17 Air’s battery life will suffer a bit and there’s reduced camera lenses to account for the reduced thickness.
We are still five months away from the massive iPhone 17 series launch. This gives Apple enough time to make necessary changes, even finalizing something concrete.
