- OnePlus 13 is touted to become the first device to host IP69 rating.
- This comes after OnePlus 12, that lagged behind competitors with its IP65 rating, compared to their IP68.
- OnePlus 13 scheduled for launch around October, likely near iPhone 16 Series launch.
OnePlus has a pretty good run when it comes to its flagship series with OnePlus 12 being the latest model. However, its IP65 water resistance rating was seen as a below-average for flagship devices given the fact that most flagship phones released in 2023 had opted for IP68. Well, this might change with the incoming OnePlus 13 as the device is expected to pack in IP68 or IP69 rating.
Dipping your phone for a perfect underwater selfie will be easy with OnePlus 13
Tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) posted about an ‘Oga’ series which translates to the OnePlus flagship numbered series. The upcoming device (OnePlus 13, of course), will see an IP68 or IP69 rating. In case the latter is true, we don’t have to say that just now but the OnePlus 13 will be better in water resistance than the Samsung Galaxy S24 Series and iPhone 15 Series – both have an IP68 rating.
What does IP69 water resistance rating mean, anyway?
It’s common for an average user not to know what the IP68 or IP69 water resistance rating means. Apple guarantees IP68 across the iPhone 15 series capable of withstanding submersion under 6m water for 30 minutes before it falls apart. Samsung Galaxy S24 series is rated for 1.5m submersion for up to 30 minutes.
With IP69 in the works, your phone can take on high-pressure water jets at high temperatures. Consider that you are holding your phone against a washing jet you would otherwise use on your car to clean it. Once the OnePlus 13 is IP69 rated, it would break both Samsung and Apple’s current IP68 features giving OnePlus an edge.
OnePlus 12 was rolled out with an average IP65 rating. Although having an official water resistance rating is good, what good is it if your rivals have a better rating, right? Seems like OnePlus has understood the same and it is opting for one-up in the case of the OnePlus 13 touted to receive an IP69 rating. In case the phone resorts to an IP68 rating, it is still a much improvement over the predecessor so that’s a win-win for all, I guess.
Neither Apple nor Samsung are currently in line to roll out devices with an IP69 rating. In case iPhone 16 series gets it, we could see it in October while Samsung’s Galaxy S25 is due for launch in early 2025. OnePlus 13 will arrive during the same time as iPhone 16 so yeah, we will get to see who rolls out IP69 first, just in case.
