Xiaomi Redmi S2 Announced: Specifications, Features and Price

As expected, Xiaomi today announced a new affordable smartphone in its home country. Yes! we’re talking about Xiaomi Redmi S2. After being in leaks and rumors for a long time, the device is finally official. One of the key highlights of Redmi S2 is its selfie camera. The Chinese brand claims this device has the best selfie cameras in the entire Redmi series.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 was launched today in the city of Nanjing at the headquarters of Suning.com. Suning is the official partner of this device. This smartphone is more like an all-rounder directly competing major budget companies. Let’s jump into the specifications right away.

Redmi S2 sports a large 5.99-inch HD+ FullVision display with the resolution of 720×1440 pixels. The device boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon  625 SoC coupled with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB onboard storage. Xiaomi Redmi S2 supports dual Nano SIM and runs on the latest version of MIUI.

One of the key highlights of the smartphone is its front camera sensor. The smartphone comes with a 16-MP front camera sensor with 2-micron pixels. The front camera features an AI Portrait Mode, AI Smart Beauty, and front HDR. At the back of the device, you will see a vertical dual camera setup having a primary sensor of 12-MP and a secondary 5-MP sensor. The rear camera has an aperture of f/2.2 with PDAF autofocus and LED flash. Just like the front camera, the rear dual sensor supports Artificial Intelligence making it the best camera in the Redmi series.

As already discusses, Redmi S2 comes in two variants – 3GB RAM plus 32GB storage and 4GB RAM plus 64GB storage. Both the variants supports expandable storage via Micro SD up to 256GB. Xiaomi Redmi S2 still has a Micro USB port, not the Type C which is sad. It packs a smaller 3080mAh battery as compared to other recent Redmi devices.

The device also comes with a Face Unlock feature, a Xiao AI voice assistant, and iPhone-like antenna lines.

The first Redmi S series device comes in three different colors –  Champagne Gold, Platinum Silver, and Rose Gold. It will be available from May 17 on its partner website Suning. A 3GB RAM variant will cost you CNY 999 which is roughly Rs. 10,600 in Indian currency. Xiaomi Redmi S2 4GB version, on the other hand, is priced at CNY 1,299 which is roughly Rs. 13,700 in Indian rupees.

Most of the specifications and design of the Redmi S2 looks similar to the Redmi Note 5. The device is still positioned below the Note 5. While there is no information on the global launch but we’re expecting the brand to launch the device soon.
