Apple is reportedly exploring the possibility of introducing cellular connectivity for Mac to its lineup. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is investigating the integration of a modem chip in future Macs, although a cellular-enabled Mac is unlikely to debut before 2026.
Apple’s custom 5G modem
It intends to launch its long-waited custom-built 5G modem chip during 2025. Initially, the modem will make its debut in the iPhone SE, low-cost iPads, and the “Air” iPhone 17. The technology is going to be tested through the rollout on some products before their mainstream use in flagship devices. In the next three years, it plans to roll out a custom 5G modem into Apple’s product ecosystem, possibly targeting the Mac.
A Mac with cellular connectivity would work exactly like an iPhone or iPad with 5G connectivity, meaning that it would not require any Wi-Fi networks or cellular hotspots. This would give users who use their Macs to be productive on the go a lot more flexibility.
Advancing 5G technology for Macs
Apple’s first-generation modem chip will have sub-6GHz 5G speeds, and its second generation will introduce faster mmWave technology. The third generation is aimed at outperforming Qualcomm in both performance and AI. This is a strategy of phasing out Qualcomm chips from Apple in favor of the in-house modem technology developed by the company.
Why cellular connectivity for Macs matters
The addition of 5G connectivity to Macs would fall within the long-term plan from Apple for integration across devices to be seamless. It might help professionals who depend on reliable internet access improve on remote work, on-the-go creativity, and connectivity.
Despite many years of speculation on cellular connectivity for Macs, technology is only now advancing enough to allow its feasibility. Back in 2008, Apple did consider adding a modem chip to the MacBook Air but rejected it as too large and because carriers were unwilling to support such a device. Maybe Apple silicon and today’s advancements in chip design can finally bring this to reality.
The future of Mac cellular connectivity
While a cellular Mac is still a few years away, Apple’s developments in modem technology signal an exciting future. With its custom 5G chips, the company is poised to redefine what users can expect from their Macs, ensuring unparalleled connectivity and performance.
