- Finally, Instagram algorithm can be tweaked without resetting content preferences.
- Instagram now lets users tweak algorithm to include topics they want to consume and topics to avoid starting with IG Reels followed by the Explore tab shortly.
- The update is available across US in English and will be rolled out across the globe gradually.
A new Instagram algorithm control feature is rolling out, giving users the ability to manage what content appears in their feed. The update comes as a welcome change for those who have found themselves stuck in endless scrolling. Previously, the platform’s algorithms decided what to show based on user activity, engagement, and recommendations, with little input from the user.
Cut to now, the platform will take users’ input on topics they wish to consume and what they want to avoid, and formulate the algorithms to push similar content.
Don’t let the Instagram algorithm control you, make it work for you
This comes as a major update on Instagram earlier on Wednesday, where the blog post mentions how Instagram is letting its users see and control Reels algorithms to begin with.

Users can check out the topics Instagram algorithm thinks they are interested in. That’s just the scratch on a surface. With the new update in place, users can choose which topics they want to see more of or say less of. If I am not interested in beauty and cosmetics, Instagram won’t show them once I get them off the list. In fact, Instagram’s recommendations will adapt to the changes accordingly.
What I liked about this overhauled Instagram’s social media algorithm is its ability to redact or remove topics that you don’t want to plague your feed. It is all based on the topics selected under recommendations, so you can choose to show more, less, or none at all. Of course, you can add more topics if you want, so that the algorithm understands you better.
The Instagram algorithm lets you generate a prompt on topics you consumed earlier that you can share with your Instagram followers. For now, the feature is limited to Instagram Reels; however, it will soon propagate to the entire ‘Explore’ tab and other places across the app.
Additionally, the update has arrived across the US, with more countries getting it sooner than ever. Also, the update will soon roll out globally in ‘English’ and possibly, other major languages in the near future, such as Spanish, Hindi, French, Chinese, etc.
