Huawei finally unveiled the Huawei Mate X, the first foldable 5G smartphone at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona. Although Huawei is still to figure out its release date, the device is impressive in its all senses. For starters, it has a massive 8-inch wraparound OLED display with an overall thickness of a mere 5.4mm when unfolded and just 11mm when folded.
The 8-inch wraparound display is gigantic and serves multiple functions such as a square-shaped tablet display when unfolded, a massive 6.6-inch with 2480×1148 pixels resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio main display when folded. Finally, there is a smaller secondary display when folded i.e. is a 6.4-inch 2480×892 rear display followed by a bump that houses its camera setup, USB Type-C port, and other extensions and ports.
About the specs, the device is powered by Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s HiSilicon Kirin 980 octa-core process which is also confirmed to boost the former’s performance. Unlike other Android smartphones to hail Qualcomm X50 5G modem, Huawei is actually using its in-house Balong 5000 5G modem that will give this foldable device is one of the kind 5G support which is still something no other smartphone manufacturer has been able to pull off yet.
What makes the device powerful is its Kirin 980 octa-core SoC manufacturing using a 7nm process which has pulled great figures on AnTuTu and GeekBench scores. The device is backed by Nano-Memory Card support using its hybrid dual-SIM card slot.
According to The Verge, Huawei Mate X sports a massive 4,500 mAh which is bigger than the one mounted on Huawei Mate 20 Pro that was launched at the end of 2018. But there’s more because Huawei is integrated its upgraded version of Huawei SuperCharge with Mate X that goes at a stunning charging speed of 55W which takes the battery from 0 to 85% in just 30 minutes. For reference, Oppo’s Super VOOC charger which is one of the fastest chargers is backed by 40W outlet.
The device has no in-display FPS but an optical FPS mounted on its power button that was demonstrated at the event as well. Further, Huawei’s engineer actually invested more than three years developing 100 components for Mate X that were patented as well. The device will fetch a price tag of handsome €2,299 for its 8GB RAM and 512GB internal storage variant. The date of release hasn’t been fixed yet but Huawei is adamant to furnish the product to the consumer sometime in the middle of this year.
