- X has introduced new daily limits for free and unverified accounts.
- Direct messages are limited to 500 messages daily on the platform.
- X said the limits are aimed at improving platform stability and performance.
X, formerly known as Twitter, has implemented new X daily limits for free accounts and unverified users to maintain platform stability and reduce technical problems during busy periods. The company said the new restrictions will keep the service running smoothly for users worldwide.
The updated restrictions apply to posts, replies, direct messages, and following activity. These limits work across all devices, including mobile apps, web browsers, and third-party services connected to X.
Why X daily limits for free accounts were added
According to X, the new limits will help reduce pressure on the platform’s systems. Social media companies often use these restrictions to prevent outages and improve overall performance.
X said the changes will keep the service reliable for users around the world. The company also clarified that the limits are technical measures and are not related to content moderation or account penalties.
New posting and reply limits
Under the updated rules, free and unverified accounts can post up to 50 original posts and 200 replies per day. X noted that these limits are also divided into smaller time-based intervals throughout the day.
The platform’s overall posting limit remains at 2,400 posts per day. However, this maximum limit is also controlled through semi-hourly restrictions.
Direct messages and following limits
X users can send up to 500 direct messages each day. The company has also limited email address changes to four times per hour.
For the following activity, accounts can follow up to 400 users per day. In addition, X has a total following cap of 5,000 accounts. After reaching that number, additional follows may depend on the account’s follower-to-following ratio.
Third-party apps also count toward limits
The company said API requests made through third-party apps are included in hourly API limits. Users who connect multiple external apps to their X account may reach these limits faster.
This could affect people using scheduling tools, automation services, or social media management platforms linked to X.
Limits may change during heavy traffic
X said it may temporarily reduce standard limits during periods of unusually high traffic. These temporary changes are necessary to help maintain platform performance and avoid service disruptions.
Updates about system issues or temporary restrictions are usually shared through X’s official help page.
What happens if users reach a limit?
Users who exceed a limit will see an error message explaining which restriction has been triggered.
Most of the limits are temporary. Users can continue using the feature once the time period resets. For example, if someone reaches the posting limit, access may return after a few hours when the next limit window begins.
